About extract text from PDF

Read the text layer of a PDF, copy it, or download it as a TXT file. Make a plain-text copy of a document for notes, search, quoting, or reuse without needing to retype the visible text.

This tool is designed for a focused file task, not a broad document-editing workflow. Check the input and output summary above, then use the page preview and settings to describe exactly the copy you want to download.

How PDFolio helps you extract text from PDF

PDFolio reads the existing text layer, then shows a browser preview and provides a TXT download. A scanned page may look readable but contain no selectable text; this tool reads existing PDF text and does not run OCR.

Before you process the file, take a moment to check the file list, selected pages, and visible settings. PDFolio creates a new result rather than modifying the source file, which lets you keep the original document as a reference or make another version with different settings.

Before you download

Simple paragraphs usually extract cleanly. Tables, columns, headers, and decorative layouts can read as one flow because PDFs store positioned text rather than the original editing structure. Review the preview before relying on the TXT file.

Use clear source filenames and confirm the exact output you need before processing. That small check is especially helpful for sensitive files, repeated versions, or documents with similar page names. The settings shown beside the workspace are the settings applied to the downloaded result.

Choose a unique output filename in your downloads folder if you are keeping several versions of the same document. The original file is never replaced automatically. If you plan to send the result, use the downloaded copy rather than a browser preview, and confirm its page count or file size after processing. This helps prevent confusion between a working source and the final version.

Finish one task at a time for long or sensitive documents. PDFolio uses the same local download flow as other browser files, so your browser may ask where the result should be saved or show its usual download notification.

When the result is ready, download it immediately and open it in your usual PDF viewer to make a final check. You can then use Clear task data to release temporary file references from this browser tab. PDFolio does not create an account, cloud folder, or server-side document history.

A private way to extract text from PDF

PDFolio handles the selected files in the active browser tab. A Web Worker on your device performs the PDF task so the interface can remain responsive; document bytes are not sent to a PDF processing server, upload queue, account database, or advertising platform.

Clearing the task, refreshing the page, or closing the tab releases the temporary in-memory task data. This local approach is useful for everyday documents such as contracts, statements, IDs, and school or work files that should not need to pass through a third-party service.

Steps

  1. Add a PDF.
  2. Choose Extract text.
  3. Copy the preview or download the TXT result.

Good to know: Scanned or image-only PDFs do not contain an extractable text layer. OCR is not part of this version.
