About fingerprint PDF

Stamp a unique SHA-256 cryptographic fingerprint and recipient identifier into a PDF’s metadata and optional micro-footer. Distribute board decks, M&A teasers, investor updates, or pre-release manuscripts with per-recipient traceability.

A determined attacker who screenshots and re-types a document can strip metadata, though the visible micro-stamp remains on printed or screenshotted pages.

How PDFolio helps you fingerprint PDF

PDFolio computes the SHA-256 hash of the source bytes merged with your recipient tag using the browser Web Crypto API, writes the fingerprint into custom document keywords/subject metadata, and optionally renders a 6.5pt micro-footer along the bottom edge.

If you want to require a password to open the file, combine Fingerprint PDF with Protect PDF.

Before you download

Keep a private record mapping each recipient to their generated fingerprint ID.

When the result is ready, download it immediately and open it in your usual PDF viewer to make a final check. You can then use Clear task data to release temporary file references from this browser tab. PDFolio does not create an account, cloud folder, or server-side document history.

A private way to fingerprint PDF

PDFolio handles the selected files in the active browser tab. A Web Worker on your device performs the PDF task so the interface can remain responsive; document bytes are not sent to a PDF processing server, upload queue, account database, or advertising platform.

Does fingerprint PDF change my original file?

No. PDFolio creates a new file for download. Your source file remains unchanged on your device.
