About split PDF by bookmarks

Extract separate chapter PDFs automatically using the bookmark outline embedded in your document. Break a textbook, manual, board packet, or specification PDF into individual chapter files named after each section.

Multiple bookmarks pointing to the same starting page are consolidated so empty zero-page files are never created.

How PDFolio helps you split PDF by bookmarks

PDFolio inspects the PDF outline tree via PDF.js, resolves each bookmark destination to its exact page index, computes the page span up to the next bookmark, and exports each chapter.

If your PDF lacks bookmarks but has consistent chapter headings in the text, use Split PDF by Text.

Before you download

Any front matter before the first bookmark is exported as a separate 00-front-matter.pdf file so no pages are dropped.

When the result is ready, download it immediately and open it in your usual PDF viewer to make a final check. You can then use Clear task data to release temporary file references from this browser tab. PDFolio does not create an account, cloud folder, or server-side document history.

A private way to split PDF by bookmarks

PDFolio handles the selected files in the active browser tab. A Web Worker on your device performs the PDF task so the interface can remain responsive; document bytes are not sent to a PDF processing server, upload queue, account database, or advertising platform.

  1. Add a PDF that has a bookmark outline (table of contents).
  2. Select whether to split at Top-level chapters only (Level 1) or include sub-sections.
  3. Process locally and download each named chapter PDF.

Bon à savoir : If the PDF does not contain an embedded outline dictionary, use Split PDF by Text or Split PDF ranges instead.

Yes. Each downloaded file includes the section number and sanitized bookmark title.

What happens to cover pages before the first chapter bookmark?

Pages before the first bookmark are saved into a dedicated front-matter PDF.

Does split PDF by bookmarks change my original file?

No. PDFolio creates a new file for download. Your source file remains unchanged on your device.
