About add page numbers to PDF

Add page numbers with position, format, start number, and cover-page controls. Number a report, proposal, scan, or multi-page packet so readers can refer to a specific page after it is printed or shared.

Numbering is positional: each page receives its index plus whatever start value you set, so the sequence always runs consecutively and cannot restart at a section break or follow a document's own internal numbering. Three formats are available, a bare number, Page N, and N of total, drawn in 10-point Helvetica at 28 points from the edge. Skipping the first page shifts the count so the following page becomes your start value. Numbers are drawn on top of the page, so a document that already has a footer in that corner will end up with both.

Page Numbers writes a counter and nothing else. For a running title, a document reference, a case number, or any fixed text along the top or bottom edge, Header & Footer is the tool that takes arbitrary strings. If the label needs to sit across the middle of the page rather than at an edge, Watermark is the better placement.

Organize a PDF before numbering so the printed sequence matches the finished document. Use Header and footer when you also need a repeated document label; the two tools solve different parts of the final layout.

When the result is ready, download it immediately and open it in your usual PDF viewer to make a final check. You can then use Clear task data to release temporary file references from this browser tab. PDFolio does not create an account, cloud folder, or server-side document history.
