About unlock PDF

Remove password protection from a PDF when you know its current opening or owner password. Use Unlock PDF when you own or are authorized to access a protected document and need a password-free copy for a trusted workflow, compatible software, printing, or a subsequent PDF task.

This removes protection you can already open. You must supply the current password, and nothing here recovers, guesses, or bypasses an unknown one. The file is checked first, so a PDF that is not encrypted is rejected rather than silently rewritten, and the result is verified to be genuinely decrypted before it is offered for download. An incorrect password produces a clear message rather than a corrupt file. Documents protected only by an owner password, which open without prompting but restrict actions, may not be handled by this route.

How PDFolio helps you unlock PDF

PDFolio first checks whether the selected file has a supported PDF security dictionary. It then uses the password you enter to decrypt the file in a local Web Worker and confirms that the exported bytes no longer contain PDF encryption. The password and document stay in the active browser tab; they are not sent to a server.

Unlocking produces an unprotected copy, which is worth pausing over if the file is sensitive: the download has no password at all. Protect PDF re-applies encryption when you want to change a password rather than remove one, by unlocking and then protecting the result.

Before you download

Only unlock a document you are authorized to access, and keep the new unprotected copy in a safe location. Removing an opening password also removes the protection that kept the file private, so consider protecting the result again before sharing it. PDFolio supports AES-256 and legacy RC4 PDF passwords. AES-128 encrypted PDFs are not currently supported.

When the result is ready, download it immediately and open it in your usual PDF viewer to make a final check. You can then use Clear task data to release temporary file references from this browser tab. PDFolio does not create an account, cloud folder, or server-side document history.

A private way to unlock PDF

PDFolio handles the selected files in the active browser tab. A Web Worker on your device performs the PDF task so the interface can remain responsive; document bytes are not sent to a PDF processing server, upload queue, account database, or advertising platform.
