About split PDF by text

Scan each page for a keyword or phrase and start a new PDF file whenever a match is found. Separate a 100-page accounting batch of multi-page invoices, payslips, or customer statements where section lengths vary.

Requires a selectable text layer. Image-only scans must be run through OCR PDF first so text can be detected.

How PDFolio helps you split PDF by text

PDFolio reads the selectable text layer of every page using PDF.js in a Web Worker. When a page after page 1 contains your search phrase, a split boundary is recorded and each range is exported as a standalone PDF.

If your PDF already has an outline or table of contents, Split PDF by Bookmarks is faster and does not depend on matching body text.

Before you download

Matching can be case-insensitive or case-sensitive. Make sure the trigger phrase only appears on the first page of each document section.

When the result is ready, download it immediately and open it in your usual PDF viewer to make a final check. You can then use Clear task data to release temporary file references from this browser tab. PDFolio does not create an account, cloud folder, or server-side document history.

A private way to split PDF by text

PDFolio handles the selected files in the active browser tab. A Web Worker on your device performs the PDF task so the interface can remain responsive; document bytes are not sent to a PDF processing server, upload queue, account database, or advertising platform.

Steps

  1. Add a text-based PDF packet (such as batched invoices or statements).
  2. Type the keyword or header phrase that marks the first page of each section (e.g., INVOICE or Statement Date).
  3. Process locally and download the separated PDFs.

Good to know: Page 1 always starts the first file. Any subsequent page containing your keyword starts a new output file.

Frequently asked questions

What if the keyword is not found on any page?

PDFolio stops and notifies you so you can adjust the search phrase rather than downloading unsplit files.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Only if the scan has an embedded text layer. Run OCR PDF first on image-only scans.

Does split PDF by text change my original file?

No. PDFolio creates a new file for download. Your source file remains unchanged on your device.
